“Hello Rob, my name is Sarah, Emma wants sign writing hand painted onto this wall;

Left of the doorway we want a colourful sign, looking fresh and with elements of circus fun. In contrast to this, we want another sign to look as if it was done during the era of imperial coinage.

For the wording, Sarah gave me a hand written note by Emma.

Social media sign writing:

Various designs were done over several weeks exploring different ideas and suggestions, by people of whom all, especially Sarah, contributed to the final design. For both sign writing projects, Sarah Coates of Smith and Coates interior designers, chose the perfect colour scheme.
Heritage sign writing:

Instead of ghosting the lettering, the sign writing has been aged by hinting it was done before the renovation of the building begun circa 1985. The name Emma Bridgewater is in a decorative style befitting to sign work done on bare brick walls during the Edwardian era. A serif letter style is used to give the impression the typeface currently used by the company has evolved over time, from the sign writing done on the wall. As many of the buildings here in Stoke on Trent were coated in black soot from the bottle ovens, the bricks and mortar I blackened prior to the sign writing. The lettering was set out so a small section of the sign writing is hidden under a metal plate. These metal plates are an important attribute to the architecture of 19th Century building in a city with coalmines.

To design the lettering style for hand decorated pottery, I used the tall ascenders, top loop of the h, letters d and p from Emma’s hand written instructions. The letter y, is from a hand written name on a page in a book published in 1893 about the benefits of beautiful art for the lives of people.
